Followers of the debate regarding sword dancing and the recent UK Violent Crime Reduction (VCR) bill concerning swords may be interested to follow these two links.

A petition (now closed) was started on behalf of bellydancers. This is the response from the Prime Minister's Office.

It strikes me that we should be covered in the section which gives a defence to "those supplying offensive weapons for TV, theatrical performances and film productions." in that, surely Our Dance is "theatrical"?  However, we may not "count" unless we are members of a performers' union, e.g. Equity.  Also, the response does not say whether the law cares if a blade is sharpened or not.

Well...we know that bellydancers come from all walks of life.  Any sparkly lawyers out there?  We'd love to hear from you.
